Kid's jiu jitsu program
Kids and youth classes bring the same high‑quality instruction to younger students, using age‑appropriate drills, games, and challenges to build coordination, discipline, and resilience. Children learn strong Jiu Jitsu fundamentals while also developing teamwork, emotional regulation, and confidence through positive reinforcement and achievable goals. The atmosphere is fun, structured, and designed to help kids thrive.

Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes provide structured learning pathways for beginners through to advanced students, with each session balancing technical instruction, positional drills, and live rolling. The focus is always on safety, respect, and personal growth, creating an environment where people can challenge themselves while feeling genuinely supported.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why jiu jitsu? What will I get out of it?
Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed in Brazil in the early 20th century and has become popular around the world. Jiu Jitsu gives you a practical, adaptable way to protect yourself while building real confidence in your body and your decision‑making. It sharpens your problem‑solving under pressure, teaching you to stay calm, think clearly, and move with purpose even when things feel challenging. Along the way, you’ll get stronger, fitter, and more resilient in ways that translate far beyond the mats. Most importantly, you’ll become part of a community that supports your growth and celebrates every step of your journey.

Do I need any experience to start?
Not at all. Our classes are designed to support complete beginners through to advanced students, and you’ll be guided step‑by‑step at a pace that feels right for you.

Is Jiu Jitsu safe for me or my child?
Yes. Safety is at the core of everything we do. Classes are structured, supervised, and taught with clear communication so you can learn confidently and minimise risk. Our coaches are trained in First Aid and CPR and have extensive experience teaching both adults and children, ensuring techniques are taught safely and appropriately.

Do I need to be fit before I start?
No. Jiu Jitsu builds your fitness as you go. You’ll get stronger, fitter, and more coordinated naturally through training.

Will I or my child be getting punched/kicked/hit?
You or your child will learn to defend against strikes during controlled self-defence drills with our coaches, but there will be no physical impact. It's important to note that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) does not involve striking or kicking, so you or your child will not be learning to hit anyone.

What if I have an injury?
Our experienced coaches will work with you and your injury. Please tell the coach at the commencement of the session about any injuries.

What’s the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
We offer both Gi and No‑Gi classes at Forge. Gi classes use the traditional uniform (similar to a karate kimono), which allows students to grip and use the clothing for control and technique. No‑Gi classes are trained in shorts and a T‑shirt or rashguard, with no clothing grips allowed, creating a faster, more movement‑based style. Both formats are valuable, and many students enjoy training in both.

What should I wear?
We suggest wearing comfortable exercise clothes – tights or shorts (without pockets) and tighter fitting t-shirt are ideal for your first class. If you decide to continue the Forge Jiu Jitsu team you can choose a gi that suits your style and budget (see below for some suggestions).

What are the hygiene and cleanliness guidelines and rules that I should be aware of?
To keep our mats clean and safe, shoes are never worn on the mats and must be worn off the mats at all times (especially when using the bathroom). All training clothes — including the belt — should be washed after every session to maintain good hygiene. Please ensure nails are trimmed to prevent accidental scratches. Finally, if you or your child are unwell, we ask that they stay home to help keep our community healthy.

Do I need to bring anything?
We suggest bringing a water bottle and a mouthguard.

Can women train at Forge?
Absolutely. We offer inclusive mixed classes as well as dedicated women’s sessions designed to build confidence, capability, and community.

Do you offer kids classes?
Yes. Our kids program (for age 4 to 12 years of age) focus on fun, discipline, coordination, and confidence, with age‑appropriate drills and a supportive environment.

Can I give my child training tips from the sidelines?
We love that parents are engaged in their child’s progress, but we ask that you leave the coaching to our instructors during class.

How is discipline handled in kids classes?
Discipline is an important part of learning Jiu Jitsu and growing as a person. We set clear expectations for behaviour and apply them consistently so classes remain safe, respectful, and enjoyable. If a student is struggling to follow instructions, our coaches address it promptly and kindly — using verbal reminders, short breaks, or, if needed, removal from the mat for that session. We emphasise teamwork, communication, and respect so kids can develop confidence and strong character both on and off the mats

How often should I train?
Most beginners start with one to two classes a week, and increase as they feel comfortable. There’s no pressure — consistency matters more than intensity.

Are there additional fees for gradings?
No. Gradings are included in your membership, along with belts

What if I’m nervous about starting?
That’s completely normal. Our community is warm, welcoming, and supportive, and we’ll make sure you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.
